Uckfield lose to local rivals Buxted in a damp squib, report from Tom Grimes
On a damp, humid day, Uckfield 1st XI hosted Buxted 2nd XI at a wet Victoria Ground, with the 2nd XI fixture at Bells Yew Green called off due to the weather.
Great efforts from the Uckfield Groundsman made the game playable and so, after losing the toss, Uckfield went out to bat on a low, slow wicket that made runs hard to come by. Buxted’s bowlers, in particular Hunter, Marchesi and J Coleman, made doubly sure that was the case with some disciplined bowling, frustrating the home batsmen. Wickets went at regular intervals as a result, with Coates (30) stubbornly digging in to be the main exception. Important cameos from the skipper, Shelley (26) (a reverse sweep off his second ball the feature of his innings), and Taylor (23) got much needed runs but in truth the home team were well short, finishing on just 118.
At tea then, Uckfield were deflated and knew early wickets were essential when they took up the ball. Two wickets duly arrived following tight opening bowling from Boniface and Brady, but were not enough, and even after Coddington fell for 28, Buxted comfortably eased home with 11 overs and 7 wickets to spare, with Sutton (42*) and Marchesi (28*) to the fore.
Next week the Uckfield Anderida 1st XI host Linden Park and the 2nd XI travel to Glynde & Beddingham.
