That and more in the weekend sporting report
The match between Uckfield United and Ditchling Reserves in the Mid Sussex League was abandoned after seven minutes, following a serious injury to United captain Barry Squires. A clash of heads left the player unconscious and with what appeared to be a fractured cheekbone. We wish Barry a speedy recovery.
In the Southern Combination League, AFC Uckfield Town earned a creditable point from a goal-less draw against an in-form Broadbridge Heath at the Oaks. In other results in the Mid Sussex League, Ridgewood went down to a two-nil defeat at home to Roffey Development. Newick were three-nil winners over FC Sporting. There were defeats for Nutley, who lost five-one to DCK, and for Fletching, who were beaten three-one by Willingdon Reserves.
Buxted defeated Hurstpierpoint two-nil. Lewes moved up to third in the Isthmian Premier Division after a four-two home win over Haringey Borough. Lewes’s Ladies team beat Coventry United four-one. In the Women’s Super League, a stoppage-time goal gave Brighton and Hove Albion a one-nil victory over Leicester Ladies.
In local rugby, Uckfield’s unbeaten record came to an emphatic end, as they were well beaten by 43 points to nil at top-of-the-table East Grinstead. Uckfield’s second team edged home against local rivals Newick by 17 points to 14.
For local horse racing fans, there is another meeting at Plumpton this afternoon, with the first race due off at a quarter to one.
