London 3 South East Uckfield RFC 1s v Old Williamsonians RFC 1s

Rugby – Result – Uckfield RFC 1s 38 Old Williamsonians RFC 1s 0

Uckfield’s 1st XV managed to put together a solid performance despite the conditions to beat bottom placed side by 38 – 0 to record a bonus point win.

While playable, Hempstead Field was exceptionally heavy under foot. Uckfield played with the wind at their backs in the first half and were able to show their desire to play as much positive rugby as possible in the conditions. Uckfield scored their first try within 10 minutes of kick off, after a number of phases with veteran Stephen Hartfield crashing over from close range.

Uckfield’s second and final try of the half came after 25 minutes. A number of phases off the ruck lead to good back interplay and winger Cullum Harvey racing over in the left hand corner to score the games second try.

Half Time and Uckfield were 12-0 up but feeling frustrated that they were making a number of basic errors.

Uckfield were keen to dominate the contact areas more in the second half and take the game to the Old Wills defence more in the second half. After only 7 minutes of the second period underway, winger Cullum Harvey scored again, this time a more individual effort and completing a fine score. Uckfield made a number of changes early in the second half, of note was young back, Joel Andrews making his debut for the Uckfield 1st XV. He immediately made an impact racing 35 meters before being stopped meters from the line by a high tackle. The penalty try was awarded. Andrews struck again 5 minutes later making another break, this time not to be denied by a high tackle to score on his debut.

With the final play of the game, Uckfield broke from a scrum in their own 22. The ball eventually found its way to Harvey Stonebridge who raced 30 meters before a number of passes lead to second row Harry Harper-Dowe to score.

Uckfield were encouraged by the team performance especially the second half. They now enjoy a two week break from League action before heading two critical weeks of games against strong Kent sides.
