Local cricketer makes county debut

Former Buxted player Will Sheffield

Local cricketer Will Sheffield, who was brought up in Uckfield and worked his way from Buxted Park’s Under 9s to their first team, made his first-class debut for Sussex’s county side at the weekend in their Bob Willis Trophy match against Middlesex.

The 19 year-old left-arm fast bowler signed his first professional contract with Sussex in 2019, but has had to work hard to recover full fitness after missing virtually the whole of last season due to a knee injury.

Will took his maiden first-class wicket in his fourth over of the game with Middlesex, finishing with one for 45 from 13 overs in the first innings and 0 for nine in the second, as Sussex went down to a five-wicket defeat.

Will is the first former pupil at the Aldridge Cricket Academy to be part of Sussex’s men’s professional squad.  He also became the first player to benefit from support from the Matthew Hobden Trust, which was established in 2017 in memory of the Sussex bowler who passed away aged 22.
