Today Wednesday 9th December is Woolly Hat Wednesday
Volunteer and prolific knitter, Avril Austin from Lewes, is Chailey Heritage Foundation’s secret weapon in their Christmas fundraiser which starts today. The charity is asking supporters whether companies, schools, families or individuals to wear their favourite woolly hat and donate £2 to the charity on Woolly Hat Wednesday – today the 9th December. Avril, who has been putting her knitting needles to good use for the charity for more than three years, has been busy creating some unique woolly headgear which are being sold by the charity to raise funds – whether people choose to wear them on Woolly Hat Wednesday or any other day.
Her quirky creations include Christmas Puddings, turkeys and other novel designs, all available on the charity’s Etsy store – just visit www.etsy.com and search for ChaileyHeritageFdn.
It was a chance meeting with a mum whose child was a pupil at Chailey Heritage that originally inspired retired Avril to get knitting.
Avril said: “At Chailey Heritage, I am part of something special and, being creative, I can help raise some money while doing something I love.”
Jenna Durdle, Chailey Heritage’s Fundraising Manager, said: “I take my hat off to Avril and all our other fantastic supporters, but this year, for one day, we are asking them to put their woolly hats ON and help boost our funds! COVID-19 has made 2020 a very tough year for charities, but we were determined to put a smile on everyone’s face and that’s where our Woolly Hat Wednesday comes in.”
To give your £2 donation to Chailey Heritage for Woolly Hat Wednesday, text HATS to 70251.. All the money raised goes to support children and young people with the most complex physical and learning challenges. Post your photos on social media with the hashtag #whw.
Jenna added, “Whether you get involved by dusting off a novelty hat from last year, buy one from our Etsy store or knit your own, we can’t wait to see what our supporters have been hiding in their wardrobes! This is a chance to have some festive fun while raising much needed funds for our amazing young people at Chailey Heritage.”
