In the weekend’s local football, AFC Uckfield Town went down to a disappointing three-one defeat at Eastbourne United in their first match of the New Year, writes David Eggleston.
Uckfield failed to capitalise on the home side being reduced to ten men after their goalkeeper was sent off in the 16th minute. Eastbourne United took the lead midway through the second half, before Uckfield equalised two minutes later thanks to an own goal. But, the hosts then scored twice in the closing minutes to wrap up the victory.
Uckfield are back on the road again tomorrow evening, when they visit Alfold in another league clash.
There were plenty of goals in the games involving our main local village teams. In the Mid Sussex League, Buxted were three-one winners over Ardingly. Fletching won four-three at Willingdon Reserves, whilst Maresfield lost by the same scoreline against Buxted Reserves. Elsewhere, Newick had a four-one win over Barcombe. And, in a cup match, Ridgewood won four-three at near neighbours Nutley.
In the Betvictor Premier Division, there was a good win for Lewes, who won by the only goal at Haringey Borough.
But, Brighton and Hove Albion’s hopes of emulating their FA Cup run last year were dashed at the first hurdle, as they lost one-nil to Sheffield Wednesday at the Amex Stadium.
