In Saturday’s local football, AFC Uckfield Town moved up to sixth place in the Southern Combination Premier Division thanks to a late goal from Dean Stewart-Hunter which gave them a one-nil win at Saltdean.  (Images below) But, the victory was tarnished by a serious injury to club captain Richie Welch, who suffered a broken tibia.

Uckfield face a busy week ahead.  Tomorrow evening, they meet Eastbourne Town in a league clash which has been switched from the Oaks to their opponents’ ground.  Then, on Thursday evening, the Uckers go to Peacehaven and Telscombe in their re-arranged Sussex RUR Cup semi-final.

In the Mid Sussex League, Ridgewood were beaten four-three by Crawley Devils at the Uckfield All-weather pitch.  All the other scheduled games involving our main local teams were postponed.

There was another disappointing result for Lewes, as they lost two-one at home to Kingstonian.  Lewes are now just three points above the relegation zone in the Betvictor Premier Division.

And Brighton and Hove Albion picked up what could prove to be a valuable point from a goal-less draw at high-riding Wolves.  The Seagulls are now two points above the Premier League drop zone.

Uckfield rugby club were without a fixture at the weekend.  Meanwhile, Newick’s match at Hove’s third team was postponed.

And finally, for local horse racing fans, there’s another meeting at Plumpton this afternoon, with the first race due off at two o’clock.
