Historic Milepost stolen

Wealden Police have been made aware of a road side milepost being stolen from the A22 near Halland, Sussex between 3rd and 24th January 2020.

Mileposts have been a roadside feature from the early 18th Century, sadly they are in decline, around 9000 are thought to survive in the UK, some were removed or defaced in World War II and not all were replaced afterwards. Many have been demolished as roads have been widened, or have been victims of collision damage.

PCSO Daryl Holter, Heritage Crime Officer says: “They are unique to the locations that they stand and are a glimpse to yesteryear, constructed of cast iron and ornately decorated they are another strand to the fabric of our past”.
