It was a disappointing weekend for Uckfield’s senior football and rugby teams, with both clubs suffering home defeats, writes David Eggleston.
AFC Uckfield Town were beaten two-one in an ill-tempered affair against Saltdean at the Oaks. The visitors went ahead with a penalty late in the first half and secured all three points with a second goal in the 93rd minute. There was still time for Uckfield, who finished the game with ten men, to pull a goal back through Matt Rodrigues-Barbosa, but it wasn’t enough for Uckfield, who will be hoping to get back to winning ways tomorrow evening, when they entertain Horsham YMCA in a 7.30 kick-off at the Oaks.
Elsewhere in football, in the Mid Sussex League, there was another good win for Ridgewood, who beat Ashurst Wood five-nil at the Maresfield Recreation Ground. Maresfield themselves lost four-nil at Eastbourne Athletic.
Meanwhile, in cup matches, there was a crushing nine-nil win for Newick at Ansty Sports and Social Club Reserves. Buxted were three-one winners over Sovereign Saints, while there were defeats for Nutley and Fletching.
Lewes are out of the FA Cup. Despite taking the lead at home to Bowers and Pitsea in their second qualifying round tie, Lewes conceded twice late on to lose two-one.
And in the Premier League, Brighton and Hove Albion had to settle for a point from a goal-less draw at Newcastle.
In rugby union, Uckfield went down to the narrowest of defeats, as they were beaten 26 points to 25 by Pulborough in their opening home fixture of the season at Hempstead Fields.
And finally, Sussex’s cricketers begin their final County Championship match of the season this morning, as they face Worcestershire at the County Ground Hove.
