In the weekend’s local football, there was disappointment for AFC Uckfield Town, as their hopes of a long run in this season’s FA Vase came to an end with a four-nil defeat at Binfield.
Although Uckfield had some early chances, it was the hosts who went ahead with a first-half penalty, before doubling their lead early in second half and then sealing victory with two further goals in a four-minute spell.
Uckfield have another big cup match tomorrow evening, when they visit Eastbourne Borough in the third round of the Sussex Senior Cup.
In the Mid Sussex Football League, the only game involving our main local teams to survive the weather on Saturday was at Maresfield, who were two-nil winners over Ansty Sports and Social Club Reserves.
Lewes earned a point from a creditable goal-less draw at home to second-in-the-table Folkestone in the Betvictor Premier Division.
And in the Premier League, Brighton and Hove Albion gave leaders Liverpool a scare after conceding twice in the opening quarter. The Seagulls pulled a goal back with 15 minutes remaining, as ten man Liverpool held on for a two-nil win, despite the sending off of their goalkeeper.
In local rugby, Uckfield’s first team were without a match at the weekend.
And finally, there’s another National Hunt race meeting this afternoon at Plumpton, where the first race is due off at 12.30.
