In Saturday’s local football, AFC Uckfield Town went down to a three-nil home defeat to Newhaven in the Southern Combination League. Uckfield finished the match with nine men after two red cards, as the visitors scored twice in the final ten minutes to seal all three points.

In the Mid Sussex League, Newick were five-two winners at home to Eastbourne Athletic. Meanwhile, Buxted’s game at Hollington was postponed.

Lewes kept alive their play-off hopes in the Bostik Premier League, following a one-all draw at fellow play-off contenders Leatherhead.

But it was a dreadful day for Brighton and Hove Albion, who crashed to a five-nil defeat by Bournemouth at the Amex Stadium. The Seagulls are now five points above the final relegation place in the Premier League occupied by Cardiff, who visit the Amex for a crunch match tomorrow evening.

Rugby Club are Champions

In rugby union, Uckfield made it a league and cup double after winning the Harveys of Sussex Shield, beating Burgess Hill in the final by 20 points to eight at Hempstead Fields.

The Eastbourne Eagles speedway team recorded their second win of the new season with a convincing 63-27 victory over the Somerset Rebels in the Championship Shield at the Arlington Stadium.

There was an excellent first win of the season for Sussex’s cricketers, as they completed a six-wicket victory at Durham yesterday. Stiaan van Zyl (stee-ann-van-Sale) guided Sussex home with an unbeaten century.

And finally, congratulations to everyone from the Uckfield FM area who completed yesterday’s Brighton Marathon.
