In Saturday’s local football, there was a good win for AFC Uckfield Town, as they defeated Newhaven four-two in an entertaining match at the Oaks. Matt Black scored a hat-trick for Uckfield, whose other goal came from Liam Baitup.
Uckfield are back at the Oaks tomorrow evening, when they host Eastbourne United, with a 7.45 kick-off.
Lewes are still looking for their first win of the season in the Betvictor Premier Division following a two-nil home defeat by Bowers and Pitsea.
And Brighton and Hove Albion earned a point from their first home match of the season with a one-all draw against West Ham at the Amex Stadium.
In the weekend’s local cricket in the Sussex Cricket League, Uckfield Anderida had their relegation from Division Seven East confirmed, as they went down to a three-wicket defeat at local rivals Maresfield. Once again, captain David Tungate was the pick of the batsmen with 63, but it wasn’t enough to prevent another defeat for Uckfield in a closely contested game.
Buxted Park boosted their promotion hopes with a two-wicket win in a low-scoring match at Little Common Ramblers. Isfield also won by two wickets against Ringmer. There were victories too for Fletching, who had a comfortable 145-run win over Willingdon, and for Blackboys, who won by three wickets at Robertsbridge’s second team.
Elsewhere, Newick went down to a 112-run defeat at Bells Yew Green, and Nutley lost by 45 runs to the Kerala Strikers.
Meanwhile, an inspired spell of bowling from Ollie Robinson has put Sussex’s county team in a good position after yesterday’s opening day of their Championship match with Middlesex at Hove. Robinson took a career-best 8 for 34, as the visitors crumbled to 75 all out. Sussex begin the second day today on 128 for three.
And finally, in speedway, the Eastbourne Eagles completed their weekend tour of the North last night with a 47-43 win at Newcastle, following defeats on the two previous nights by Edinburgh and Berwick.
