In Saturday’s local football, there was a terrific result for AFC Uckfield Town, as they won by the only goal at joint leaders and previously unbeaten Lancing.

Matt Maclean scored the decisive goal in the 14th minute, and despite considerable pressure from the home side, Uckfield held on for a notable victory.

Uckfield are back in action again tomorrow evening, when they visit Eastbourne Town in the first round of the Sussex Senior Cup.

In the Mid Sussex League, Ridgewood drew one-all at Copthorne Reserves.  There was a big win for Fletching, who thrashed Eastbourne Rangers Reserves seven-nil.  Buxted had a four-nil win over Ansty Sports and Social Club.  And there were also wins for Maresfield, who beat Hurstpierpoint Reserves four-three, and for Newick, who were four-two winners over Eastbourne Athletic.  Meanwhile, Nutley were beaten four-two by Peacehaven and Telscombe Reserves.

There was a dramatic win for Lewes in the Betvictor Premier Division, as they came back from two-nil down to snatch a three-two victory at Brightlingsea Regent – Lewes’s winner coming in injury-time.

But there was disappointment for Brighton and Hove Albion, as they went down two-nil at Chelsea in the Premier League.

In rugby union, there was another narrow defeat for Uckfield, as they lost at Park House by 17 points to 14.

And lastly, the Eastbourne Eagles speedway team ended their season on a high note on Saturday night, when they beat the Birmingham Brummies 37-23 in a rain-curtailed meeting at the Arlington Stadium.
