Bells Yew Green win over Anderida

On a close, muggy Saturday afternoon, Uckfield Anderida travelled to Bells Yew Green, looking for their second win of the season.

After winning the toss, captain David Tungate chose to bowl, despite the good surface and small boundaries.

This decision was vindicated, with openers Chris Brady and Matt Reed starting excellently, limiting Bells Yew Green to 27-1 off 10 overs. Despite Anthony Muggeridge’s tight bowling spell (2-34), Bells Yew Green piled into Uckfield’s change bowlers.

With a mix of good stroke play, a large slice of good fortune and indifferent fielding, Bells Yew Green reached 90-2 at drinks, and were set for a big score. Fifties from Lautch and Ketchell put them in a good position, however Uckfield came back well. Tight bowling from Iswariah (1-15) and Jonathon Ralph (returning to the club 23 years after his last match) limited Bells Yew Green to 250-7 in their 40 overs, a target Uckfield thought they certainly had a chance of chasing.

Bells Yew Green used the new ball well, accounting for both openers Moore and Greenslade for 6. This brought Tungate and Darren Spice together, who set upon chasing the target down. They played well, Spice playing some back foot off drives which this reporter could only dream about playing!

Unfortunately, when Spice departed for 25, Uckfield were in a bit of a hole. Tungate continued, with the very healthy support of Reed and Ralph, he brought up his hundred in the 31st over.

With Uckfield needing 52 off 30 deliveries, victory was within reach. Unfortunately, for Uckfield, the very impressive Callum Miles returned. He had Tungate caught at deep square leg for 112, and then took four more wickets in the space of 3 overs to seal the victory for Bells Yew Green, as Uckfield were bowled out for 206. 11 points were taken from the day, but it could have been so much more.

Meanwhile the 2nd XI lost to Barcombe at the Victoria Ground, despite some excellent bowling from junior player, Dan Gee.

Next weekend, Uckfield host Robertsbridge in a must-win game at the Vic, whilst the second team travel to Wadhurst.
