Despite the adverse weather conditions, it was a good weekend for Uckfield sport with important victories for the town’s senior football and rugby teams.
In their first completed league match for four weeks, AFC Uckfield Town got their Southern Combination season back on track with a dramatic win over Broadbridge Heath at the Oaks. Liam Baitup scored the only goal of the game in the 92nd minute.
Meanwhile, there was an invaluable first win of the season for Uckfield rugby club. They earned a bonus point victory with a 33 points to 12 win against the Old Dunstonians at Hempstead Fields.
Elsewhere in local rugby, Newick lost 17-nil at Midhurst.
In local village football, Fletching were beaten two-one at Cuckfield Town in the Mid Sussex League, while in a cup match Maresfield won two-one at home to Lindfield’s third team. The cup game between Nutley and Ridgewood was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
Lewes’s hopes of a run in the FA Trophy came to an end with a two-nil defeat at high-flying Folkestone in the first qualifying round.
And in the Premier League, there was a dramatic victory for Brighton and Hove Albion, as they beat Everton three-two at the Amex Stadium, thanks to an own goal in stoppage time.
