In the weekend’s local sport, it was a great day for Uckfield rugby club, as they sealed the Sussex Division One title, thanks to a superb 34 points to 29 victory at their nearest rivals Crawley.
In local football, AFC Uckfield Town got back to winning ways after back-to-back defeats with a fine four-two win over Lancing at the Oaks in the Southern Combination League. Dee Okojie scored twice for Uckfield, and other goals came from Steve Hickman-Smith and Matt MacLean.
Uckfield are back at the Oaks tomorrow evening, when they host second-in-the-table Newhaven.
In the Mid Sussex League, there was a big win for Newick, who crushed Fairfield seven-nil. Elsewhere, Buxted lost two-one at home to Hollington, while Nutley drew one-all with AFC Varndeanians Reserves. Meanwhile, Ridgewood lost their cup semi-final at Ashurst Wood five-two.
Despite taking an early lead, it was another disappointing day for Lewes, who went down three-one at home to Sussex rivals Whitehawk in the Bostik Premier League.
And a late goal was enough to give Brighton and Hove Albion a crucial one-nil win over bottom club Huddersfield at the Amex Stadium. The Seagulls are now five points clear of the Premier League relegation zone.
