Following another very successful year, Uckfield & District Lions Club welcomed in their new President at a Changeover lunch at the Pig & Butcher pub on Sunday 1 July.
Outgoing President Keith Mates, on the right, thanked members for their support over the past year, and presented Peter Lloyd-Bostock & Chris Sherwood with certificates of appreciation for their work as committee chairmen. During the past year over £26,500 was raised which was used to support other charities & good causes. This fantastic amount of money could not have been raised without the continued amazing support of the people of Uckfield & surrounding villages. Uckfield Lions would like to take this opportunity of thanking all the people who have supported our fund raising events.
Outgoing President Keith Mates then passed the chain of office to the incoming President, David Skinner, and a scrap book recording the year’s events was presented to Keith.
The incoming President, David Skinner MJF, said that he was looking forward to a good year ahead, especially as it was Uckfield Lions’ 50th year serving the local community. David considered that the Club had all the necessary good committees in place, and with the continued support of enthusiastic members, the Club would have a very good 50th year.
David joined Uckfield Lions in 1984 & his main focus in Lions is through promoting Lifeskills to schools. Personal, Social and Health Education-PSHE- is very important in schools and sometimes neglected. Lions International provides a range of resources that help schools with PSHE.
David was awarded a Melvin Jones Fellowship (MJF) in 2015, and the Bert Mason Humanitarian Award at the Multiple District Convention 2018 for his work with Lifeskills.
Much of the money raised by Uckfield Lions is through established events such as Easter Egg raffle, Lions Big Fun Day in June, 10K Run, monthly quiz nights at the Ringles Cross pub on the first Tuesday of each month, with the Supermarket raffle & the Lions Santa Sleigh, both taking place in December. The Lions Second Hand Bookshop in Olives Yard off the High Street, also raises money throughout the year, open Tuesday to Saturdays 10am-4pm.
