It’s official, Sussex, and in particular Uckfield, has the best cinema in the UK

Compare and comedian Adam Buxton presented The Picture House Uckfield with Cinema of the Year 2018 (24 screens and under) at The Screen Awards 2018 organised by Screen Daily and held on The Ballroom on the South Bank last night.

Cinema owner Kevin Markwick (who grew up in the cinema since the age of 2) was absolutely delighted.    The Picture House was previously nominated at the 2016 awards and came runners up so it’s great to finally have success in 2018.

Kevin said.  ‘Myself and my team are absolutely delighted with the award.  It’s reflects a number of years of hard work and investment with one aim to give our customers to have the best cinema experience and night out’.

The family owned independent cinema has always kept up to date with at least one major refurbishment every decade.  The latest in 2015 saw a £500,000 complete rebuilding of the cinema interiors and floors to improve sound and comfort to the highest standard, followed by the acquisition of the restaurant opposite to be able to offer customers a meal or a drink before or after their film.

2017 started the investment in a brand new £120,000 website bringing the cinema and the restaurant together. After 18 months the site was launched on 3rd September. Customers can purchase tickets and book a table or be offered a meal deal all in one easy transaction.  No other cinema website has this capability.  Plus this year has seen continued investment in technology with £70,000 spent on Sony 4K projectors for all three screens. The projectors improve picture quality with more natural colour reproduction, better brightness and a contrast ratio as well as the wonderful true 4K images for the highest resolution. The only cinema in Sussex to have them in all screens.  The Picture House Restaurant was also refurbished in 2018 to reflect The Picture House identity and to install energy efficient appliances.

It’s great reward and recognition for independent cinemas in the country and for the huge amount of hard work and investment that has gone into The Picture House over the last few years.  With one purpose of making it the best cinema experience and night out for customers. On December 15th 2018 the cinema will be celebrating it 102nd birthday.
