Uckfield were looking to make it two wins from two and close the gap with the teams outside the relegation zone against 3rd placed Bromley.
While still missing a number of regular first team players Uckfield welcomed back Cheney, Austin and recently resigned Joel Forward all starting on the bench. Another return game in the small form of veteran and Uckfield club legend, Colin Bradley making a very rare appearance in the front row for the first team.
Uckfield started the brighter of the two teams with fly half Buckland, converting a penalty after 5 mins to give the Acorns an early lead. Bromley would hit quickly back however with a shot of there own. 3-3.
The Acorns had a dominate spell of possession but were unable to capitalise, Bromley however struck once they got into the Uckfield 22. 3-10. Uckfield responded however 10 minutes later when centre, Dan Poulton scored after some excellent Uckfield phases of possession.
Bromley hit a penalty soon after the Uckfield score however making the score 13-15 with only 5 minutes until the break.
A penalty to Uckfield and a long range kick to the Bromley corner lead to a line-out. Uckfield when for the driving maul and to the delight of the Uckfield Balcony watching on, it was veteran Bradley who emerged as train scorer.
Half time 15-13.
Uckfield made a number of changes at half time and early into the second half, Forward playing for Uckfield for the first time in 8 years and Austin taking the place of veteran Bradley making a big impact into the front row. Austin seems to have found his natural home at Loose Head prop, he certainly has the physique for it!
Bromley scored immediately after the break, 15-20. Uckfield had a number of chances to score, falling short on the Bromley try line. The Acorns were hugely frustrated as they pushed on to score over and again.
It was Bromley however that ended the half how they started with a final try to deny Uckfield a bonus point.
A better Uckfield performance but one which the whole squad and coaching staff thought was a lost opportunity.
The result:Uckfield RFC 1s 15 – Bromley RFC 1s 27
A week off next and then back to the campaign for The Acorns.
