Council tax – Helping pay for public services

Wealden District Council has approved an increase averaging less than 10 pence a week for its share of the council tax for 2020/21.

Your council tax helps pay for a wide range of public services provided by East Sussex County Council, Sussex Police, East Sussex Fire and Rescue and local town and parish councils. Wealden’s share of the overall council tax bill is just 9%. It helps pay for refuse and recycling collections, planning, street cleaning, environmental protection and free car parking.

“We have decided to increase the amount an average Band D property pays by £5 a year, with proportionate increases of 2.6% across the other bands,” said Council Leader, Bob Standley. “There is some uncertainty about the economic situation councils and businesses face in the coming year. A small increase is prudent, given that the recent Local Government Finance Settlement has changed the amount of money we will be able to keep next year through business rates.

“We have a strong record of sound financial management, and have become largely self-sufficient. Investments we have made though our commercial strategy will help us deliver our ambitious Corporate Plan. This includes our Climate Emergency Action Plan.”

The new Wealden council tax rate was approved at the meeting of Full Council on 19 February. Cllr Standley told the meeting that the net cost of providing Wealden’s services in 2007/08, when he took control of the Council’s finance portfolio, was £17.77 million. In the coming year, the net cost would be £17.752 million. This was £18,000 less despite 13 years of inflation. The Council has continued to provide a good level of services over these years.

Here is how an average Band D council taxpayer will contribute to a range of public services over the coming year;

Band D council tax 2019/20 2020/21
East Sussex County Council  £1,434.78 £1,492.02

Wealden District Council £192.44 £197.44
Uckfield Town Council £160.99  £165.76
Total per year £2,071.79 £2,150.66
