On a scorching hot day at Victoria Pleasure Ground, Uckfield hosted top of the league Herstmonceux, writes Tom Grimes.
After captain David Tungate won the toss, he unsurprisingly chose to bat on a good surface and in difficult bowling conditions.
That did not deter the Herstmonceux bowlers though, Paddy Smith and Nick Toomey bowling with good pace and accuracy, with openers Kev Morton and Chris Moore falling for 1 and 0 respectively. Tungate and wicket keeper Andrew Shelley rebuilt, taking Uckfield to 47-2 at drinks.
Herstmonceux kept on coming however, with Hobden and Ladham proving excellent back up bowlers. Shelley fell for 15, and that brought a couple of wickets soon after, medium pacer Toby Guest picking up 3-24. Tungate was very watchful but looked to punish anything short.
However, soon after Tungate reached his fifty he departed for 60, causing a collapse in the Uckfield batting line up. Some hostile bowling from Toomey saw the end of lower order batsmen Iswariah, Vyas and Phillips.
Uckfield could only muster 106 all out, mainly due to some good bowling and excellent fielding in the hot sunshine.
Herstmonceux came out in an attacking fashion, looking to knock these runs off as soon as possible. What they hadn’t accounted for was off-spinner Dan Phillips opening the bowling.
Phillips proved how much his sporadic availability was missed, bowling accurately and tidily, threatening both edges of the bat. Figures of 3-36 (including a hattrick ball) did not do him justice, with some uncultured hitting towards the end of his spell.
Opening batsman Tom Crouch hit a 50, and despite being LBW to Manthan Vyas (2-8), it was more than enough as Herstmonceux ran out comfortable winners, knocking the total off with 5 wickets remaining in just 17 overs.
This loss leaves Uckfield in trouble in the league table.
Next weekend, Uckfield host Polegate, whilst the second team travel to Burwash.
