In the weekend’s local cricket, there was another defeat for Uckfield Anderida, as they went down to leaders Herstmonceux at the Victoria Ground.
Batting first, Uckfield were bowled out for 106, with David Tungate again the star of the show with 60. The visitors reached their target in the 18th over to win with five wickets in hand.
Elsewhere in the Sussex Cricket League, Nutley were involved in a dramatic tied match at Polegate and Stone Cross’s second team – both teams being dismissed for just 92.
Newick had a seven-wicket win over Heathfield, thanks to 121 from Sam Carter, while 83 from Tom Clift helped Buxted Park to an eight-wicket victory at Mayfield’s second eleven.
There were also wins for Isfield, who beat Hellingly by six wickets, and for Fletching, who bowled out St Peters of Brighton’s second team for only 91, as they too won by six wickets.
Maresfield lost by five wickets at Pett. And Blackboys lost by 26 runs to Seaford’s third team.
Meanwhile, Sussex’s county team had a frustrating opening day yesterday in their latest Championship match against Northamptonshire at the County Ground Hove. The visitors recovered from 99 for six to reach 273, before Sussex struggled to seven for two in reply.
And finally, in speedway, the Eastbourne Eagles won the first leg of their Knockout Cup quarter-final against the Leicester Lions at the Arlington Stadium yesterday by 57 points to 33. The second leg is at Leicester on Friday evening.
