In Saturday’s local football, there was an impressive fifth win in a row for AFC Uckfield Town, as they defeated Langney Wanderers three-one on Eastbourne Borough’s all-weather pitch.
Steve Hickman-Smith got Uckfield off to a flying start with a goal in the first two minutes, before further strikes from Bailo Camara and Dee Okojie either side of half-time. Uckfield were reduced to ten men after Tayler Maddock was sent off with 20 minutes remaining, but they held on for all three points, despite the hosts pulling a goal back with ten minutes left.
The victory moved Uckfield up to seventh place in the Southern Combination Premier Division table. Next up for Uckfield is a visit to Pagham tomorrow evening in the Sussex RUR Charity Cup.
Inevitably, the minor league football programme was badly affected by the weather, with all the games involving our main local teams being postponed.
In the Bostik Premier League, Lewes were held to a goal-less draw at home to lowly Potters Bar.
And it was a goal-less draw as well at the Amex Stadium, as Brighton and Hove Albion shared the points with Watford in the Premier League.
Finally, Uckfield rugby club’s scheduled cup match with East Grinstead at Hempstead Fields was another victim of the weather.
