Uckfield Civic Centre - Bye Bye Baby

Uckfield Anderida CC – 1st XI Vs Iden CC – 1st XI

On a warm, sunny Saturday at the Victoria Ground and the gentlest of breezes, captain Tungate opted to bat on a very good looking wicket against Iden. And although opener Shelley fell in the second over, Uckfield made a good start with Moore and Tungate making the most of the fast outfield, and Tungate continuing his excellent form and looking for another century on a flat hard track. The effortless flicks through mid-wicket were the highlight, for this correspondent anyway.

Moore’s scoring shots were less orthodox than the skipper but just as effective, but his luck ran out on 30 and was bowled. That prompted a mini collapse with the loss of 3 wickets in a handful of overs, and it was only when Grimes came to the crease that some rebuilding began. With Tungate they punished the bad balls and pushed the singles before Grimes was bowled for 32 playing an ugly slog in a bid to get the team to a decent score.

Hard running towards the end brought Uckfield past the 200 mark, with Tungate finishing on an impressive 125 not out, and leaving Iden with 217 to win. Over homemade scones at tea, Uckfield felt this was a competitive total, but probably 30 shy of where they needed to be.

And with the consummate Ed Avann opening the batting, Uckfield were right to be worried as he quickly began exploiting anything short, peppering the mid wicket boundary. Although he fell for 50 to a ball that kept low, his opening partner, Clemence, carried on to good effect before falling to an excellent catch in the deep from Muggeridge. Although this prompted a flurry of wickets, which kept things interesting, Iden were simply scoring boundaries too freely and were seen home in style by their skipper, Shanks, winning with 218-5 and 2 overs to spare.

On Saturday Ed Watson returns to the side in a one-off appearance as the 1st team travel to Pett and the 2nd team host Laughton.
