Isfield CC – Isfield ESCL 1st XI Vs Ringmer CC – 1st XI
The highly awaited return match between these two teams turned-out to be a low-scoring match which Isfield clinched by one wicket to maintain top of the table. Isfield captain, Neil Thornicroft, won the toss and chose to put his old club into bat on a dampish wicket.
Ringmer father and son opening pair Chris and James Peck dug in against the determined Isfield attack of Stef Halsey and Jamie Hall. Progress was slow with the plan to see off the threat of Halsey, in particular, achieved. However, Chris Peck’s dogged resistance was ended by Jack Fingerneissl with almost 50 on the board. James Peck followed with the score on 74 being well caught by Ewan Thornicroft off James Fellows for a very good 61.
Ringmer never really broke loose from the tight reign Isfield’s bowlers were keeping on the run rate. Will Crees (28), Matt Savage (19) and Dale Tranter (15 not out) with a few late blows got Ringmer to 132 for the loss of 6 wickets (Hall, Fingerneissl and Fellows sharing the wickets amongst themselves with Halsey bowling five maidens from his 8 overs). In reply, Isfield ’s run chase got off to a bad start falling to 27 for 3 in the face of some good bowling from Tranter (3-26) and Michael Parris (1-26).
Birthday boy, Huw Williams put some much needed impetus into Isfield’s batting, assisted by Jack Fingneissl (39). Ringmer kept plugging-away and excellent bowling from Matt Savage (4-11) removed Williams for 44 and the dangerous in-form Stef Halsey for a duck thanks to a superb catch in the deep from Will Crees. Although wickets fell at regular intervals, Emile Chasseaud (13 not out) and Robin Goodyear ensured that Isfield reached the required target to stay on course for promotion
