London 3 South East…. Uckfield RFC 1s v Vigo RFC 1s

Uckfield welcomed Kent side Vigo to Hempstead Fields on a fine October afternoon. The two sides last met in a Play-off fixture at the end of the 2017/18 season.

Uckfield had a number of forced changes and were without a number of first team regulars.

Vigo started the game most strongly with a penalty within 5 minutes before scoring a well worked team try on the quarter of an hour mark. It seemed to take The Acorns that time get out of the changing room and play any rugby.

From the twenty minute mark onwards, Uckfield began playing much more rugby. Constantly attacking and trying to run their various patterns to break down the Vigo defence. At 20 minutes, reliable fly half Charlie Buckland slotted a penalty from the left hand side. Uckfield continued to press until half time but couldn’t cross the Vigo line.

Uckfield were being struck down with a number of injuries throughout the first half and had to adapt quickly and change tactics.

The second half Uckfield again had a number of chances to score and after 7 minutes, Matt De Souza crashed over to score. The conversion was missed. 8-10. Vigo pushed the lead to 5 points moments after Uckfield’s score to 8-13.

Uckfield pushed and pushed, getting within inches of the Vigo line but couldn’t quite get to score. With 4 minutes to play, Vigo managed to turn the tables and score a break out try if their own to make the final score 8-18

Uckfield were left hugely frustrated again, with another opportunity that should have been a victory, yet again lost.

Strong performances from Smart, Armstrong, Austin upfront as well as some excellent attacking play from Chappell and Evans on the Wing and Full Back respectively.
