Result: Bells Yew Green CC – 2nd XI – Won Batting First by 39 runs
|Uckfield Anderida CC – 1st XI||Bells Yew Green CC – 2nd XI|
|154-8 (40 overs) ‘t’||193-8 (40 overs)|
Uckfield played Bells Yew Green in their second match of the season, keen to put right their defeat last week.
It started well for Uckfield, with opening bowler Matt Reed claiming an early wicket. Bells Yew Green built steady partnerships however, with captain Andrew Broughton proving the mainstay, with some lovely leg side shots using the pace of the ball well. He had good support from Ellis and Jones before Uckfield pegged them back. An excellent second spell from Reed claimed him three more wickets, halting Bells Yew Green’s push for 200. With two wickets apiece for Joe Burns and David Tungate, Bells Yew Green were restricted to 193.
In response, Uckfield’s openers started well, being 36 without loss after ten overs. The real difference was to be Bells Yew Green’s first change bowlers, Pearson and Bowen, who accounted for Tungate and Griffiths cheaply, before the latter having Richard Coates caught after he made a good start. The crucial wicket was that of Joe Burns. After going off with an injured shoulder, Burns braved the pain and came back in, only to chip Craven to extra cover for 37. Before Burns’ injury, he batted superbly, getting the perfect balance between defence and attack, and it was a real shame when he had to depart. After that, Uckfield were never really in the chase, thanks to some good bowling and very good field placings. Wicket-keeper Andrew Shelley and opening bowler Chris Brady scored 18 and 20 runs respectively, getting Uckfield to 154, giving them 11 points for the day.
Uckfield Anderida’s next game is next Saturday away at Robertsbridge.
Meanwhile the second XI won at Barcombe in a stormy encounter (weather wise!), with Manthan Vyas taking 5 wickets and hitting a match winning 38 not out to seal the first win of the season. Next week the 2nd XI host Wadhurst.
