Nutley 144 for 9 beat Herstmonceux 2nds 143
Nutley ensured a top half finish with a narrow win at Herstmonceux.
Having been asked to bat in glorious sunshine and on a flat wicket, Herstmonceux made a steady start through openers Dave Proctor (23) and Colin Spratley (21). However once they were dismissed it was left to Paul Sandalls (49) to hold the innings together with wickets falling regularly as Nutley rotated their bowlers who stuck to their task well. Warren Freer (3/27) was well supported by Paul Carter (2/24), Nick Parsons (2/28) and Alan Poulter (2/33) as they dismissed the hosts for 143.
Nutley’s reply got off to an awful start as Mike Galitzine (2/17) and Alan Smith (2/21) reduced them to 24 for 4 before and excellent fifth wicket partnership of 75 between Oskar Ainley (41) and Parsons (27) swung the match back in the visitors favour. Another flurry of wickets made for a tight finish and when Poulter (27) fell it was left to the last pair to hit the winning run and seal victory at 144 for 9 despite the efforts of Paul Walker (2/21 and John Cooper (2/30).
