Isfield CC – Isfield ESCL 1st XI Vs Hellingly CC – 1st XI
After the euphoria of last week’s victory over Chiddingly – which confirmed Isfield as Champions of Div. 5 East – Saturday’s final match against Hellingly could have been a bit of an ‘after the Lord Mayor’s show’ affair. However, it turned out to be a good game with Isfield winning by 6 wickets (the fifth straight victory in a row batting second).
Hellingly won the toss and batted first. Good opening bowling by Halsey and particularly Jamie Hall (3 for 25) claimed two quick wickets. Another break-through wasn’t achieved though until Hellingly captain Will Hutchings (19) was caught off the bowling of left-arm spinner Jack Fingerneissl (1 for 39) with the score at 73.
By this time, opener David Rippengal had reached a good fifty. Rippengal fell two short of a hundred when James Fellows had him well-caught by Fran Robinson with the score 136 for 4. Wickets then fell regularly with Hellingly losing 5 wickets for 44 runs to finish on 180 for 9 (Fellows 3 for 27 / Halsey 1 – 35).
Although Isfield lost an early wicket in reply, essentially three good partnerships ensured the successful run chase. Firstly, James Fellows and Ewan Thornicroft (24) put on 79 for the second wicket; followed by Fellows and Huw Williams with 49 for the third wicket. Fellows departed for a fine 79, caught off the spirited bowling of William Hook (3 for 31). The final partnership of 41 saw Williams (42 not-out) and Stef Halsey (23 not-out) bring the Champions home.
