Already relegated Uckfield Anderida welcomed promotion-chasing Newhaven in their final home game of the season. After losing the toss and being put in to bat, Uckfield started well.
Despite losing Tom Grimes in the 3rd over, Uckfield looked in a good position, with Pete Holman and David Tungate making their way to 41-1 off 10 overs, being particularly punishing on anything overpitched by the Newhaven seamers. It was Newhaven’s decision to turn to spin which really swung the match, with Du Plooy (2-23) accounting for Tungate (44) and Holman (35) in consecutive overs. Du Plooy and Young (1-24) really put the pressure on Uckfield, with good fields set they reduced Uckfield to 90-4 off 30 overs.
Uckfield struggled to get any rhythm into their batting in the final ten overs, with wickets falling at regular intervals, meaning only Kev Morton (10) joined Tungate and Holman in double figures. Uckfield finished their innings on 124 all out.
Newhaven had no intention of taking long to chase down this less than modest target, with opener Du Plooy taking a severe liking to the offspin of Dan Phillips and the medium pace of Chris Brady. Tungate came on for the latter and got him first ball as he was looking for another big hit. Joe Burns produced a fantastic over, accounting for three Newhaven batsmen.
This left Newhaven 60-4. However, Uckfield’s hope of an unlikely victory was short lived, Drury (29) and the impressive Tullett(32) saw Newhaven home with over 20 overs to spare.
Meanwhile the 2nd XI came close to securing their survival in division XI with a comprehensive 7 wicket win at Mayfield.
Next week Uckfield play their final game of the season at Herstmonceux, whilst the second team host local rivals Buxted Park 3rds.
