Uckfield Sports Review

In Saturday’s local football, it took two late goals to enable AFC Uckfield Town to progress to the third round of the Peter Bentley Cup after a three-one victory over AFC Varndeanians at the Oaks,   writes David Eggleston.

Uckfield’s goals came from Liam Baitup, a Bailo Camara penalty and Matt Rodrigues-Barbosa.

In local village football, Nutley lost four-nil at Sovereign Saints.  Buxted were beaten three-one at home to AFC Varndeanians Reserves, and there were also defeats for Fletching, who went down three-two at Bolney Rovers, and for Maresfield, who lost two-nil at Buxted Reserves.  Meanwhile, Newick were three-one winners over Ditchling Reserves.

There was another entertaining game for Lewes, as they drew three-all at home to Potters Bar in the Betvictor Premier Division.

And in the Premier League, Brighton and Hove Albion had to settle for a point in a one-all draw with Burnley at the Amex Stadium, with the visitors scoring an equaliser in stoppage time.

In rugby union, Uckfield’s first game of their new campaign ended in a 17 points to three defeat at Folkestone.

And there was disappointment too for the Eastbourne Eagles speedway team.  They lost 48-42 to the Leicester Lions in the first leg of the Championship Shield Final at the Arlington Stadium on Saturday night and were well beaten in yesterday’s away leg to lose the final 103-76 on aggregate.

In cricket, promotion-chasing Sussex begin the penultimate match of their County Championship season this morning, as they visit Derbyshire.

And finally, there’s another flat race meeting at Brighton this afternoon, with the first race due off at twenty to two.
