On a chilly, early May lunchtime, Uckfield Anderida 1st XI set off down the A22 to face Polegate & Stone Cross for their first league game of the season.
With a new 40/40 format to contend with, Uckfield were sensibly put in to bat on a slow and green pitch. Polegate’s openers, especially Calcott, bowled well and accurately meaning it was slow progress for Uckfield.
After the loss of 3 wickets before the halfway mark, Matt Reed (20) steadied the ship and a fantastic quick fire 20, including sweet aerial drives and an eye pleasing pull shot from 15-year-old Johnny Griffiths (20) provided good support to David Tungate (57). It was looking like Uckfield could make their way to 150, but good death bowling from Fitzpatrick and Hover kept Uckfield to a below par 129.
In response, Uckfield’s openers bowled well, Reed removing Hover and Chris Brady being as accurate and economical as ever. However, with all Polegate batsman getting in and getting half a score, it was always going to be difficult for Uckfield to defend 130. And so it proved, despite Tungate’s off-cutters picking up two wickets, Polegate were always in control of the game. Brady’s second spell brought him another wicket, but Polegate only needed 30 overs to complete a five-wicket win.
Uckfield Anderida’s next game is next Saturday at home to Bells Yew Green at The Vic.
Meanwhile the 2nd XI continued their losing start to the season with defeat at home to Burwash Weald, but garnered 14 points in the process to boost morale.
