Wealden District Council is reminding all carriers of waste, including scrap metal, to ensure they are registered following the successful prosecution of an unlicensed waste carrier.
Karl Smith, who is also known as Karl Miles, of Parklands, Maresfield, was stopped on 10 December 2018 as part of a joint operation between officers of Sussex Police and Wealden District Council. His van was fully laden with scrap metal but he was unable to produce any documentation to show he was legally permitted to have collected it. It emerged that Mr Smith had previously held a Waste Carrier’s licence but this had expired in January 2017.
Mr Smith pleaded guilty at Hasting’s Magistrates Court on Monday 20 May 2019 to transporting waste without the necessary licence. He was fined £1,000, ordered to pay costs of £463.50 to Wealden District Council and a £100 victim surcharge.
“We work with the Police to carry out regular checks on waste carriers as those who don’t bother to get a licence may end up fly tipping waste in Wealden’s beautiful countryside,” said Councillor Ann Newton, Cabinet member for responsibility for landscape protection.
“We want to send out a clear message to all waste carriers that they need to operate within the law. Householders can also play their part by making sure they only use registered waste carriers to take away rubbish from their property and not leaving waste or scrap items outside of their property in the hope that some unknown person will want it and remove it. Ask to see the waste carrier’s licence, and always ask for, and keep a receipt.”

If they don’t have a licence, don’t use them. You may be held liable if your waste is subsequently found fly tipped in the open countryside.
