In February, Uckfield Lions celebrates 50 years since the club was first founded.
In 1917, Lions International was founded in the United States of America. 102 years later, it is the largest service organisation in the world, with 45,000 clubs in 206 countries and 1.35 million members.
In 1969, Uckfield and District Lions club formed to serve the community, and became part of this international organisation.
Originally only including men, Uckfield Lions has changed a lot in the last 50 years. However, one thing remains the same. Whoever our members, our aim is to help others in the local community, and the wider world.
In the last 50 years, Uckfield Lions have raised thousands and thousands of pounds for local causes. Fundraising activities over the years have included Santa’s Sleigh, the annual Lion’s show, and our bookshop, running since 2011. Without the support of the community, we would not have been able to raise money to support our community, so for that we humbly thank you.
Throughout the last 50 years, Uckfield Lions have also provided services to the local community. In particular, since 2002 we have run a community minibus that has been used to support events, take out those who would normally have difficulties and much more.
As the Lions International motto states, ‘We Serve’, and the Uckfield Lions hope to continue doing that in our community for a long time to come.
