At its recent inaugural meeting ‘Plastic Free Uckfield’ decided that it would gain support from the town by engaging with the community to help reduce single-use plastic and eventually become a plastic free town.
Shops and other businesses are being encouraged to become a Refill Station for reusable water bottles; shoppers in supermarkets are going to be asked not to use plastic bags and plastic wrapped fruit and vegetable items and instead use other means.
Chairman Martin Barnett said ‘We are a small group of local people who want to see this town plastic free. We have the support of Uckfield Town Council and other groups in making this a reality. We will have a two pronged approach with the Uckfield Campaign, following the Surfers Against Sewage programme and following Refill guidelines’
He added ‘At the present time we have only one registered Refill Station in town and that is at the Costa Coffee shop in the High Street. Soon the Civic Centre will have a water fountain installed in its foyer area. But we need other premises to be prepared to help on this and re-fill reusable bottles under the scheme’
Later next month, the Town Council will launch their water fountain.
