In Saturday’s local football, it was a notable day for AFC Uckfield Town, as they recorded their first-ever win in the FA Cup. Uckfield defeated Kent side Glebe one-nil in the Extra Preliminary Round at the Oaks. Bailo Camara scored the all-important goal after 74 minutes, after Uckfield had missed a penalty early in the second half.
In their opening match in the Bostik Premier League, Lewes went down to a one-nil defeat at home to Carshalton.
And there was disappointment too for Brighton and Hove Albion, as they lost two-nil at Watford in their first game of the new Premier League season.
In the weekend’s local cricket, there was another defeat for Uckfield Anderida, who were beaten by Lewes St Michaels at the Victoria Ground. Replying to the visitors’ 221 for one, Uckfield fell 20 runs short, despite 96 from David Tungate.
But, there was an excellent win for Buxted Park. They trounced the league leaders Rye by 119 runs, with Darren Calico making 100 and then taking three wickets.
Newick won their clash with local rivals Fletching by 90 runs, thanks largely to Sam Carter’s 98.
Biggest winners of the day were Isfield, who crushed Robertsbridge by 271 runs, with Jamie Hall striking an unbeaten 151 in a total of 350 for five.
Elsewhere, Blackboys had a 24-run victory over Ditchling’s second team.
But, there were defeats for Maresfield and Nutley against Polegate and Dicker respectively.
And in speedway, it was a good weekend for the Eastbourne Eagles. They followed up their win over Plymouth in Devon on Friday night with victory over the same opponents at the Arlington Stadium on Saturday night by 54 points to 36.
