In Saturday’s local football, there was a third successive away win for AFC Uckfield Town in the Southern Combination League, as they defeated Loxwood three-one. Matt McLean scored twice for Uckfield inside the opening 10 minutes, before Gianfranco Mici added a third before half-time, with the home side netting what proved to be a consolation on the hour mark. Uckfield are back in action tomorrow evening, when they visit Hassocks in another league game.
It wasn’t the best of weekends for our main local village teams whose games survived the weather. Nutley lost seven-nil at home to Charlwood. Ridgewood were beaten six-one by Balcombe Reserves, while Newick went down to a four-one home defeat by Polegate Reserves. Fletching had their match at AFC Ringmer Reserves abandoned at half-time due to the state of the pitch. And Maresfield’s visit to Ditchling Reserves was postponed.
In the Bostik Premier League, Lewes’s home clash with Margate was another victim of the weather – the match being abandoned in the first half with the game nil-nil. However, Lewes remain top of the table on goal difference.
And Brighton and Hove Albion suffered a two-one defeat to Chelsea yesterday at the Amex Stadium.
In rugby union, in their final game of 2018, Uckfield maintained their 100 per cent record this season, thanks to a narrow 12 points to eight victory at Eastbourne.
And lastly, for local horse racing fans, it’s the final National Hunt meeting of the year at Plumpton this afternoon.
