Residents have taken to social media noticing that all the 20mph speed signs placed in September 2016 after the road improvements have been removed.
An East Sussex County Council spokesman said: “The 20mph signs were installed as part of the Uckfield Town Centre High Street Improvement Scheme.
“We now need to complete the necessary legal process and therefore the signs have been temporarily removed whilst we advertise the Traffic Regulation Order.
“This will be advertised early next month, initiating a 21-day consultation period in which people can comment on the proposed limit.
“If, taking into account any comments we receive, the decision is taken to press ahead with the 20mph speed limit, the signs will be reinstated.
“We would like to apologise if this has caused any confusion.”
“Regrettably, there was a miscommunication between the council and contractors, and the signs were erected in error before the relevant Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) was put in place. We apologise for this error. The signs have now be been removed in advance of advertising the TRO. “
