AFC Uckfield Town’s memorable season in cup competitions continued on Saturday, as they progressed into the third round of the FA Vase for the first time in the club’s history, following a two-one win at AFC Croydon Athletic.
But, it was a victory achieved in the most extraordinary circumstances, with Uckfield finishing the match with seven men, after four players were sent off. Goals from Ellis Cormack and Callum Smith had given Uckfield a two-nil lead on the hour mark, before the flurry of red cards began and the home side, who themselves had a player dismissed, then halved the deficit. But, Uckfield clung on in the final minutes to record a dramatic victory.
Uckfield are back in cup action tomorrow evening, when they visit Worthing, who are two leagues above Uckfield, in the Sussex Senior Cup.
In the Mid Sussex League, the big winners were Nutley, who crushed Lancing United twelve-nil. There were also wins for Ridgewood, who beat the Chagossian and Mauritian Association by the only goal, and for Fletching, who won three-one at Burgess Hill Rhinos. Elsewhere, Buxted lost three-two to Cuckfield Rangers, and there were also defeats for Newick and Maresfield.
In the Bostik Premier League, Lewes’s run of good form came to an end at Kingstonian, where the hosts scored a late winner for a two-one victory.
And Brighton and Hove Albion’s three-game winning streak in the Premier League was ended with a three-one defeat at Everton.
In rugby union, it’s now eight wins out of eight for Uckfield, who remain top of the table after a 13-six victory at local rivals East Grinstead.
And finally, for local racing fans, there’s another meeting at Plumpton this afternoon – the first race is due off at one-thirty.
