Uckfield Town Council is pleased to announce that Mr Ian Bedwell, of Ridgewood, Uckfield has been appointed as Uckfield’s new Town Crier – a tradition that can be traced back to medieval times.
Ian was appointed to his new role following interviews which took place on Tuesday 27 March where candidates were also asked to rehearse and perform a ‘cry’. The interview panel included Seaford’s Town Crier, Mr Peter White, the Mayor of Uckfield, Councillor Louise Eastwood, and the Town Clerk.
Ian has lived in the town for 20 years and is an active member of his community. Commenting on his appointment Ian said: “I am proud to take on this new and prestigious position and I am looking forward to working alongside the Town Council, local businesses and community groups within the town.”
Holly Goring, Town Clerk said: “The role of Town Crier is an important means of communicating major events and meetings in the town. We are delighted with Ian’s appointment and are looking forward to hearing him cry out about our events. We hope residents and visitors alike find him informative and entertaining.”
So watch this space and await the sounds of Oyez, Oyez, Oyez in the High Street soon!
