Fire damages garden furniture at Selby Garden

Damage by fire has been caused to garden furniture at Selby Garden.

Local resident and organiser of Selby Meadow, Velda Reed took to Facebook yesterday and published images of the fire damage, which happened on Sunday 14th October just after 2:30pm.

She said ‘Look what the horrible people have done to Selby Meadow this afternoon thank you to Sharon and Brian who were quick to stop the blaze , what is going on ?

Town Councillor Daniel Manville said After such a lovely event last week this is really terrible! Who knows how serious this could have gotten if it hadn’t been spotted’

Last Sunday, Selby Garden held a successful open day with a display of more than 1,000 hand knitted poppies.  (See ‘Poppies Galore at Selby Meadow’ )

Among a host of other comments the Mayor of Uckfield Cllr. Spike Mayhew said ‘ Oh my god what is wrong with these people all the hard work that goes into making a nice family friendly place spoilt by thoughtless thugs. If there is anything I can do to help please contact me Velda’

There were suggestions to lock the area,  block the area from the field next door, provide CCTV

This is the second time in the past two years a fire has caused damage to Selby Meadow.  In April 2016 fire caused damage to a children’s play house.

A Sussex Police spokesperson told Uckfield FM ‘A wicker chair and plastic table were damaged by fire in the community garden in Selby Road, Uckfield, on Sunday afternoon (October 14).

The incident was reported to Sussex Police at 3.32pm as having been discovered around 2.40pm.’
